Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all members of the Cranston Chess Club!

We will be ringing in another new year shortly.  We hope that chess will be a big part of your personal activities in 2017.  We have partnered with the Southeast New England Chess Association (SENECA) to run a series of QUAD Chess Tournaments right here in our local chess club in Garden City!  The dates are February 25, April 8 and June 3, 2017. (all are on Saturdays)  All the quads are in 3RR format where you play 3 games total.  Players are placed in rating order so you are guaranteed 3 games with players near your own playing strength.  Go to senecachess.org for more details.  Hope to see many of you at the quad tournaments.

Lou Giarrusso was recognized by the
US Chess Federation as the oldest active
chess player in the state of Rhode Island.
Congratulations Lou!

2016 Boston Chess Congress

Cranston CC members at 2016 Boston Chess Congress!
The weekend of Jan 8-10 saw three Cranston Chess Club members participate in the 2016 Boston Chess Congress held at the Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor Hotel.  Mark Neale, Frank Vogel and Richard Dusza all played in the U1900 section of the tournament.  The tournament was very successful by organizer standards as 252 players in 6 sections came to do battle in the chess wars. Mark, Frank and Richard scored 3.5, 2.0 and 1.5 points respectively.  All three members enjoyed the excellent playing conditions at the hotel.  The picture below is taken from the first
floor cafe that overlooks Boston Harbor.  The hotel has 15 floors and provides great views of the harbor and airport.  The glass elevator is another nice touch that lets you view the outdoor scenery as you go about your business.  Cranston CC members should try and play at large tournaments on occasion as it adds a different perspective to your chess experience.  Good chess! - Frank Vogel
